Vegetable Production in New Mexico

The New Mexico State University Extension Vegetable Program is part of the New Mexico Cooperative Extension Service. Dr. Stephanie Walker is the Extension Vegetable Specialist at New Mexico State University and head of the Extension Vegetable Program. Her primary research interests include genetics and breeding of chile peppers, vegetable mechanization, enhancing pigment content, post-harvest quality and irrigation efficiency.

The Jose Fernandez Memorial Garden

Increasing local production of vegetables begins with identifying varieties that will provide high yields and desirable qualities for local consumers. The Jose Fernandez Garden (JFG) was established at NMSU’s Heritage Farm to evaluate underutilized selections, as well as heat tolerant vegetables, to determine relative productivity under environmental conditions found in southern New Mexico. - See Crops in drop down menu on the right and click on Alternative Crops for more information.
